The Tram to Shipley Glen Card Bradford, West Yorkshire
The Tram to Shipley Glen Card Bradford, West Yorkshire
The Shipley Glen tramway is located just on the outskirts of Saltaire’s Roberts Park and goes up to Shipley Glen, on the edge of Baildon moor. It’s the oldest working tram of it’s type Europe, a narrow-gauge funicular with a little red car and a blue one.
Workers from Bradford and the surrounding area would come to enjoy the fresh air of Shipley Glen and visit the fairground and toboggan ride. The fair was opened in 1879 andhe owner of the attractions built the tram in 1895 to earn more money from those who didn’t want to walk up the hill to the glen’s Pleasure Grounds. The fair and tram were places I grew up with but sadly the fair closed in 2005 but thankfully the tram remains, for a while by Bradford Council but now by a group of enthusiastic volunteers.
It’s a much love place to me and was actually one of my first ever screen prints, for this version and I wanted to really show the tram going through a lush green tunnel of trees.
