Whitby Harbour Card North York Moors
Whitby Harbour Card North York Moors
In this screen print I wanted to show the piers where the River Esk meets the North Sea, these piers that were not built asa seaside attractions like in places such as Saltburn but instead to serve a purpose to the protect the entrance to the harbour and provide shelter for the boats from the sea.
The North Yorkshire coast was historically crucial to the importing of coal and export alum and the Whitby was the only natural harbour between the Tees and Humber. The piers as they are now were extended in the 20th century to control the water flow and in the landscape I wanted to show how these man made structures reach out into the vast blue North Sea.
