In the Making... is a new event to support the next generation of Contemporary Craft Makers in the UK, through a programme of showcase exhibitions and Artist/Maker-led talks and workshops, from established Makers and professionals within the industry.
The event aims to give new makers a fascinating insight into the world of contemporary craft practice, for those wanting to develop a career in Making, or who simply have an interest in contemporary craft and design.
The project will also give visitors to the gallery a ‘behind-the-scenes’ view into one of the largest growing creative industries in the UK. See the work of well known and established Artists and Makers, whose work can be found in galleries throughout the country. Chat with them about their practice during our scheduled talks, and let them share their skills with you and make your own piece of contemporary craft in our Artist-led workshops.
The project is divided into 2-week blocks, with each focusing on one specific contemporary craft practice:
Printmaking – 3rd to 15th February
Textiles – 24th February to 8th March
Ceramics – 17th to 29th March

Meeting Room Gallery
In the Making. . . – Emerge is a changing series of exhibitions that will showcase the work of talented early-career Makers and contemporary craft and art students, with a focus on Printmaking, Textiles, and Ceramics.
Community Room Gallery
Gain an insight into the practices and careers of six acclaimed and established contemporary craft Artists, Makers, and creative professionals. Their work will be on display in the gallery, alongside photographs and other material that will show their practice in action. A series of artist talks and artist-led workshops will accompany this exhibition.
Founder and owner of contemporary craft gallery, Snug, in Hebden Bridge, Ed will talk about his experience of working with Artists and Designer-Makers, and share his wisdom on all things craft and design.
The Creative Networking Event on Friday 27th March, will run from 6pm to 8pm, and will be an opportunity to meet established Artists and Makers, Gallerists, members of art organisations, educators, creative industry professionals, and early-career Makers, to chat about contemporary craft, create new contacts, and find out about opportunities and events, all in the relaxed and informal atmosphere of South Square Gallery.
