YORKSHIRE LANDSCAPE SCREEN PRINTS

This is a popular spot locally, located on the edge of Ilkley Moor in Bradford but close enough to be a favourite day out for those Leeds, this outcrop sits high above Wharfedale above Ben Rhydding. This feature of millstone grit and a boulder next to it, the reason behind the name Cow and Calf, although is a little confusing to those who don’t know it, some trying to find the cows in the screen print.

Legend has it that Rombald (as in Rombald Moor) the giant was running from his angry wife and stamped on the rock as he jumped across the valley and split the rocks into the Cow and Calf. She was said to have dropped stones from her skirt and created The Skirtful of Stones

A favourite spot amongst West Yorkshire boulderers and climbers, and visitors for the amazing views across the landscape of the Wharfe Valley.

I spend a lot of time in Ilkley growing up so it’s become one of my personal favourites, along with exploring the moorland above. I wanted to depict a darker autumnal colour palette with oranges and deep greens.

I think pretty much everyone in West Yorkshire knows the iconic structure that is Emley Moor Mast. It’s visible for miles, I can even see it from my Rawdon Studio (if I go on my tip toes) and for a lot of people spotting this tower on the horizon is a symbol of being nearly home. Another subject I love and do like revisit but I really wanted to look at the mast a lot more close-up than in previous prints which depicted it in the landscape around it, and really try to show the scale of this massive grade II listed concrete monster of a TV transmitter. It even takes 7 minutes in the lift to get to reach the tower toom! Can you tell I love it?

Located in Kirklees, outside Huddersfield, this is the tallest free standing structure in the UK at 319m and stands 20m taller than the shard (that’s got to be one of my favourite facts) this is even though it’s height was reduced by 11m with the recent works but the recent works reduced that shortened the antenna

This particular view is from near the Three Acres Inn pub and I just love the contrast of the mast to the deep blue of the sky which just feels vast.

Doing a screen print of The Hepworth Wakefield has been a long time coming, it’s quite a daunting building to depict and the first of my prints to show something that’s been built in my life time.

I’ve been lucky enough to participate in events with this wonderful Wakefield gallery since they started them back in 2014, first with a Christmas Fair and then the Print Fair. I also had an exhibition of my work in the Hepworth Cafe and available at the shop in 2015 - 2016, so after a decade it felt about time to do a print!

This is my favourite view of this West Yorkshire gallery, although I do love the Hepworth Garden too that wasn’t there when I first started showing here and this was the main way I would walk to the gallery. I love how this angular concrete building sits in it’s landscape, the contrast of nature of the willow tree and grasses, flowing water of the Calder going over the weir and concrete angular building with the remains of the towns industrial past.

This award winning building designed by architect David Chipperfield sits on the banks of the River Calder and the windows beautifully frame the surroundings as if works of art themselves. This modern structure is façade is clad with self-compacting pigmented concrete and in a very different to the industrial buildings that surround it and probably a little controversial at the time but there’s a lot of love for this building, inside for the Barbara Hepworth sculpture and for the bravery of the building itself.
